Ancient Thira in Santorini

On the top of the promontory Mesa Vouno (396 metres above sea level), between Kamari and Perissa, lies the ancient city of Thira. Not to be confused with today's capital of Fira.

It is believed that the Ancient Thira was inhabited from the 9th century BC. Today there is little left of the once so prominent city, most of it is in ruins, but some buildings are still in a decent condition, including an ancient theatre, a temple dedicated to Dionysus, the main square, the Basilike Stoa (galleria) and a number of important graves. What makes Ancient Thira really worth seeing is in my opinion the extraordinarily beautiful view over Kamari and Perissa.

The easiest way to get to Ancient Thira is to drive the winding road from Kamari. The nicest, and clearly the most difficult way, is to hike the path that starts from Perissa.

Ancient Thira is located at the top of the mountain.

No matter how you get up, you still have a little way to walk to get to the top, where the ancient city is located. A kantina selling refreshments at high prices lies just below. Ancient Thira is open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. every day except Mondays. The best with Ancient Thira is the views of Kamari and Perissa.
